To quote Michael Stucker from his on-line
history of Can-Am:
Sportscar racing became very
popular in the US after WWII. So popular, that in 1966 the Sports
Car Club of America (SCCA) along with the CASC (Canadian Automobile
Sports Club), founded the Can-Am series for Group 7 type sports
racers. Because of sponsorship from Johnson Wax, the Can-Am
was the best paying racing series in the world. This meant that
the cream of international auto racing were very interested
in the Can-Am. F1 World Champions John Surtees, Jody Scheckter,
Jack Brabham, Graham Hill, Phil Hill, Denny Hulme, Jackie Stewart,
and Mario Andretti all participated in the Can-Am at one time
or another. Indy 500 winners A.J. Foyt, Mark Donohue, and Parnelli
Jones (along with Andretti) also did.
The race photographs
shown here were done at the 1969, 1970, and 1972 Cam-Am races
at Laguna Seca. Laguna
Seca in the late 60s and early 70s was, and probably still
is, a great place to see racing. There were many great viewing
positions. From the hill inside the track almost 60% of the course
was viewable. The famous or infamous, dependig on your view-point,
corkscrew is probably one of the most famous turns in racing.
It also makes for great viewing.
